NRIs, PIOs and OCIs – are not required to Link Bank Account, PAN with Aadhaar

Good news for all Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs).

The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) elucidated that as most NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs are not eligible to enroll for Aadhaar, therefore, are not required to link bank account and PAN with Aadhaar.

Linking of bank accounts with PAN is mandatory only for individuals who are eligible to enroll for Aadhaar, according to the Prevention of Money laundering Rules 2017 and the Income Tax Act.

Compulsory quoting of Aadhaar for availing the service/benefits of linking Aadhaar with bank account and PAN is applicable only to residents as per the Aadhaar Act.

Most NIRs, PIOs and OCIs do not fulfill the eligibility criteria for enrolment with the UIDAI.

However, the agencies will implement various techniques for verifying the genuineness of such individuals.
