Remedies for Those Stuck in Some Foreign Countries Due to COVID-19

The U.K and India have taken steps to protect foreign nationals stuck in their countries. However, the United States has not yet announced any significant relief measures.

In the UK, all visas with an expiry date between 24 January 2020 and 31 May 2020 will be extended to 31 May 2020 if individuals are not able to leave the UK because of travel restrictions or self-isolation related to the coronavirus. The  Home Office has to be informed in a prescribed manner.

In India visas of all foreign nationals who are already in India remain valid until their expiry and will be extended until April 30, 2020 without any charge  Foreign nationals must make an online application on the e-FRRO portal.  There will no penalties for overstays.

The US government has not granted any automatic or easy extensions for affected foreign nationals. The USCIS has only announced that they will consider delayed applications on a case-by-case basis and at their discretion condone delays that are commensurate with the circumstances.
