How can one acquire Indian citizenship?

  • By Birth: If a person is born in India on or after January 26, 1950, but before July 1, 1987, they are considered a citizen of India irrespective of the nationality of their parents. For those born between July 1, 1987, and December 3, 2004, at least one parent must be an Indian citizen at the time of birth. After December 3, 2004, both parents must be Indian citizens, or one parent must be an Indian citizen, and the other must not be an illegal migrant.
  • By Descent: A person born outside India can acquire Indian citizenship if at least one parent is an Indian citizen at the time of birth, with conditions applied based on the date of birth.
  • By Registration: A person of Indian origin, married to an Indian citizen, or someone who has resided in India for a specified period can apply for citizenship by registration.
  • By Naturalization: A foreign national who has resided in India for 12 years and meets other criteria can apply for Indian citizenship through naturalization.

How can a foreign national acquire Indian citizenship through marriage?

A foreign national married to an Indian citizen can apply for Indian citizenship by registration after seven years of marriage and continuous residence in India for at least one year before making the application.

Can Indian citizenship be reacquired once it has been renounced?

Reacquisition of Indian citizenship is possible under specific conditions, such as if the individual renounced citizenship before turning 18 or if they wish to return to India after losing citizenship due to acquiring foreign nationality.
