case title

Pro Bono case for unprivileged girls from Mali

Nature of the Problem:

A US organization had started an initiative of Google employees situated in the US and India that leverages sport as a platform for facilitating leadership & community building among underprivileged girls, and challenges discriminating social norms with contemporary and relatable hero stories of girls who play sports. This organization focuses on the empowerment of girls from disadvantaged backgrounds and are working with 45 tribal girls in India to empower them and develop their leadership skills.

This organization came in touch with a US non-profit organization (NGO) which operates in Mali and provides a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children who have been living on the streets. It provides the nourishment, education, health care, and attention necessary to manage their day-to-day lives and thrive.

After feeling convinced of the non-profit organization’s approach and commitment to raising underprivileged girl leaders and the natural linkage of several of its girls with sport, the US organization approached the NGO for interest in its scholarship program which was a UNIFY Meet in India, for youth girls to develop their sports and leadership skills. They invited five girls from ACFA Mali as they had shown exceptional qualities that deserve to be nurtured and developed.

The NGO’s founder approached LawQuest to seek assistance with the India visa process for these 5 girls. During LawQuest’s virtual meeting with the Founder, we came to know about the history of the girls from Mali who were coming to India to attend the UNIFY Meet and how important it was for them to attend this Meet, so LawQuest decided to help these girls and the Founder to obtain Indian visas as a Pro Bono.

LawQuest’s Solution:

The process of acquiring visas for these underprivileged girls was a very adverse task as every day, the Consulate asked for various documents, and girls from Mali knew only French. It was a challenging task for us to communicate with them. As most of the girls were orphans, it was a little difficult to get appropriate documents per the Consulate’s requirements. However, we took small steps and got through it while overcoming language and documentation barriers.

Positive Outcome:

With the combined efforts of the US organization, the NGO and LawQuest team, the girls received the India visas and attended the sports meet. After attending the sports meet, the girls with the founder of the organization visited LawQuest’s Mumbai office to express their gratitude to the team and we all ended up having a great get-together with the girls and the Founder.

Client’s Feedback:

“Whether the visas come through or not, I have been meaning to offer you the most sincere gratitude for taking this on and helping A Child for All.  It is so appreciated and we know how much effort it took from you and your team.

This has been the most huge heavy lifting we have ever experienced in ACFA’s existence, for anything and definitely for travel.  Your expertise and professionalism were second to none.  If we are able to complete this mission, it will be thanks to you, because as a small non profit organization, ACFA, could not have afforded the fees for the services that you have rendered.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
